Oliver Huntemann
Electronic dance music has dominated urban club culture for more than a decade. Through its many highs and lows, techno music has proven that it is here to stay. The same cannot be said of very many techno artists. Hamburg-based recording artist and DJ Oliver Huntemann is, without doubt, one of the few activists from the early days still holding the torch. Via the highly profilic concept series Rekorder with Stephan Bodzin on labels like Cocoon, Gigolo or Giant Wheel, not forgetting those on his own labels, to the many DJ gigs around the worldand, last but not least, building the Super 8 Studio - Oliver Huntemann has yet to grow tired of serving up state of the art music! His instinctive
awareness that, in terms of styles and influences, electronic dance music is - and always will be - about renewal, has allowed him tomaintain a unique freshness and keep his special touch very much alive. His latest coup is a new label: Ideal. Ideal is totally dedicated to fresh electronic music, primarily in the form of his own productions. Releasing tracks as Oliver Huntemann is a perfect reflection of his personal approach to the label. Following remixes for some of the biggest names in electronic music such as Depeche Mode, Underworld, Chemical Brothers and a successful collaboration with Dubfire (Deep Dish), Oliver is still one of the hottest producers & dj on the scene. So get ready for Oliver Huntemann, on the scene for over a decade without losing his connection to the underground. This is going to be huge....

Paul Woolford
With an approach and attitude that is slightly different to most, Paul Woolford has established himself as one of the most original dj / producer / remixers that house music has exposed in recent times.

Paul's first visit to Dave Beer's infamous Back
To Basics sealed his fate in many ways, being
as it was the place where he heard so many of
the records in his own collection in the full club
context, which felt to Paul like jigsaw pieces
falling into place. 'I remember clearly the first
time I walked in, I think I was only 17; the
only way to describe it was bedlam. And the
overriding thought was 'I've got to play in
here one day!??'''. From that day on, Paul
began to fiercely develop his dj skills.
Today he holds a residency at Basics
inbetween his guest spots globally, and a
DJ style and ability beyond the reach of most
that takes an underground sound and twists
it into public conscience.

Woolford released his first record at the age
of 21, a collaboration with his friend and studio
guru Tony Senghore. Their fusions of house,
electronica and hip hop sensibilities were widely
acclaimed across the dance music media
(Single Of The Month in Muzik, Album of the
Week in Seven magazine numerous plays
on R1 and the Galaxy network), and paved the
way for an open-minded approach with which
Paul carries through as the common thread
throughout his music. Paul is heading down
to firefly to smash the dancefloor into peices!

Thanks to all who made it down to the Garvey on Friday for what was an epic night of techno shenanegans! First off was the Beat Repeaters, who treated us a quality set before the arrival of the masked, horn touting, whistle blowing Loose Cannons! Following the Cannon rinseout Felix Hot Chip eased us into some quality techno like only he knows how. Then it was time for Kanio's first Firefly appearance, he loved it, and so did we! Plenty of shuffly beats and wonky basslines kept us wobbling our ends through until the finale from our own Thrash Jelly, who spanked out some big basslines to finish off in true Firefly fashion, oh and of course a dabble in some rave classics for the lights on boogy!

So its all about the run up to the birthday celebrations we cant let loose too much yet but be sure its going to be the biggest one yet..BOOOM!

Earlybirds for fireflys 9th birthday SAT 13TH JUNE are available here.

This week we are all about bedbug with James Course and Casio Grand expect the usual great drinks prices in the newly refurbed 11 plus as always its free.  Photos from last friday will be up on the website soon!

Thrash Jelly – Bloom EP –

Release Date 11/03/09

Firefly Recordings 4th release is from our very own Thrash Jelly, who deliver 3 tracks of dancefloor techno covering a range of musical directions in line with the duo's DJ style.

Crimson Bloom is a melodic track designed with dancefloor impact in mind. A catchy main riff covers the whole frequency spectrum for maximum effect, with rolling filtered builds and pingpong bells dropping after the main break to provide a euphoric end to the track.

The aptly named "Womp", rolls in with an infectious bassline and minimal influenced blips and shuffle groovy enough to make your gran get up and dance. All but kick drum sub and siren stab are cut down for the main break, which drops with the Womp!

The Womb is the deeper track of the Bloom EP, yet it is still dancefloor friendly, with plenty of groove and shuffle complimenting a dark brooding bassline that gradually becomes more prominent throughout the track, peaking in an unexpected growl that seems to have crept up on the listener!
The Celtec Twinz turn out one their trademark rolling techno numbers on Crimson Bloom. Plenty of live drums and infectious rhythms like only they know how!

Selected Quotes

THRASH JELLY
[FIREFLY RECORDINGS] (6HOUR SET)

Firefly Presents Bedbug with ThrashJelly 6 hour set @ Eleven...Fresh from playing under the stairs in London Thrash Jellys 6 hour sets are a journey through genre and beats.

///Thrash Jelly [firefly recordings]

Jeet and Max Cooper’s combination of musical styles and a desire to test Djing technology to the limits have made an impact from the off. Their own style of DJing brings turntablism and eclectic track selection together in a fast flowing, and interactive performance based show. This exciting new approach to DJing, combined with the releases on Firefly recordings, Evolved Records and forthcoming releases on Germany’s Autist Records and Traum Schallplatten, has seen Thrash Jelly receive major management signings, national and international appearances, and a live set on BBC radio 1 in 2008.

During their long standing residency at Firefly, Thrash Jelly have played along side acts including Jeff Mills, Booka Shade, Vitalic, Hot Chip, Dave Clarke, Justice, Digitalism, Derrick May, Slam, Alter Ego, Umek, Alex Under, M.A.N.D.Y., Stanton Warriors, Paul Woolford, Justin Robertson, Speedy J, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Marco Bailey, Andrew Weatherall, Ben Sims, Adam Freeland, Plump DJs, Technasia, Freq Nasty, Phil Kieran, Rolando, Fergie, Hybrid, Green Velvet, Luke Slater etc etc etc! Even with performances along side acts of such calibre, Thrash Jelly have consistently won crowds over with their infectious energy and occasional ridiculousness.

The Thrash Jelly show consists of 3 mixers and 6 turntables being used by the pair in order to allow simultaneous scratching, juggling, mixing and layering of effects. This style of performance means that the Thrash Jelly show is a strong visual spectacle in addition to its musical merit. While Thrash Jelly mould their sound heavily on live manipulation via effects and turntablism, both members hold the flow of every set as primary, with a focus on maintaining a good musical evolution, while treating the crowd to an audio and visual performance that is truly unique.

Thrash Jellys next track is out exclusively on beatport 11th march...
